The athletic
demands that we make on the horse, asking it to participate in
sports, supporting a rider on a back that was designed only to
carry intestines or at most, foal, mean that it is essential for
all its structures to work under optimal conditions. Susan Elliott
trained with McTimoney Chiropractic College in Oxford and specialises
in joint manipulation, muscular therapy and myofascial release.
She is based in Galway and works in the west of Ireland, travelling
to treat horses and ponies.

How
I work - Susan Elliott |
| |
| |
I work by first assessing the horse by taking
a detailed case history, watching it move and making a posture and
gait analysis, performing static and motion palpation of the spine,
joints and muscles. I then gently manipulate joints as well as use
pressure point and myofascial release techniques to release joints
and muscle spasm. This alleviates pain, increases mobility and improves
performance.Chiropractic treatment can also
be used as a preventative measure. Horses benefit from having one
or two treatments a year to ensure optimal performance and peak
health. An equine back problem is almost always a secondary problem
to a primary cause, so ensure that tack fits correctly, training
regimes are appropriate and the horse’s teeth and feet are
regularly and correctly attended to. |

Chiropractic
treatment should not be thought of as a replacement for conventional
veterinary medicine. As with any health related problem or condition
that your horse may experience, it is important that a vet be contacted
initially so that he or she can assess the animal for any underlying
medical condition that could be causing similar symptoms or contraindicate
chiropractic treatment. |
